Old and new, nostalgic …..relaxing holiday.

Satoya is the name of an old traditional house in the Japanese countryside near Himeji, about one hours drive from Osaka or Kobe.

Satoya was built more than a century ago. It used to be a farm house for a family in the village. There were weddings, festivals, celebrations and numerous visitors held there until about 20 years ago. Then the family moved out of the old house and it was left empty and gradually fell into disrepair.

A man with an interest in old houses, found the house one day with his friends. He bought it and spent the next three years renovating it.

He carefully renovated Satoya to preserve the traditional fabric of the house. Typical for a house of this type, it is a single storey house, with a raised wooden floor, tatami floors and sliding fusuma doors. The wooden skeleton of huge roof timbers is retained and the kitchen/ dining is a double height space with an irori fire place in the center. The kitchen and bathrooms are fully equipped and modern.

The owner contacted us at ffeilden when he discovered we also share an interest in traditional Japanese houses, and he asked us if non-Japanese would be interested in visiting it. If you are interested, Satoya is available as a holiday retreat for breaks and weekends.

From Osaka /Kobe via Hanshin Expressway:

• Take Hanshin Expressway to Himeji-Nishi Bypass "final exit", which connects to Route 29.
• Turn left at the first signal after the exit toward Yamasaki.
• After approx. 5 km turn right at Shimo-Ise crossing.
• Approx. 5 km left side at the end of the village Otsutsumi. 
• Turn left into a narrow road at the traffic mirror on the left, approx. 50 meters go over a small bridge
• The second house on the right side is "Satoya"

From Osaka / Kobe via Sanyo Expressway:

• Take Sanyo Expressway to the exit "Sanyo Himeji Nish"
• Turn left at the first crossing after exit for Yamasaki direction.
• then same directions as above

Please note:

1. Price for weekend and high season add 5,000 yen to the price above High season is Saturdays, days before National Holidays, New Year: Dec 20 to Jan 3, Obon Holiday: Aug 12 to Aug 17
2. Storage for your own futon is  available for 3,000yen per year.
3. For more than 6 guests, additional guests are 2,000yen per person per night. 　　Extra bedding can be arranged.

• Check in after 2pm / Check out 10am 
• Between one & two week stay, calculate one week rate plus daily rate.
• Self catered  See the list of facilities.
• Someone will show you how to use the facility and fireplaces on your first visit.

• Refrigerator washing machine, audio, oven and microwave, rice cooker, hot water pot, fan, room steamer There is no TV or VCR
• pots, frying pans, sieves, bowls, Japanese dishware, glasses, Dutch oven Iron pot and Pans, Cutlery
• Soy sauce, sugar, salt, cooking sake
• Aluminium foil, clingfilm, garbage bags, detergent, soap, kitchen cloths
• Please bring your own towels and toiletries.
